The short version: Your data stays on your device. We don't collect it, we don't see it, and we don't sell it. Palate is designed to be private by default.
1. Information You Provide
When you use Palate, you may enter the following information:
- Meal descriptions: text descriptions of what you eat
- Food tags: categorized labels for your meals (e.g., "dairy," "chicken," "spicy")

- Notes: optional free-text notes attached to feeling check-ins
- Name: your first name, used for personalization within the app
- Preferences: your tracking settings and notification preferences
This information may be considered health-related data under certain regulations. We treat it with the highest level of care.
2. Where Your Data Is Stored
All data is stored locally on your device. Specifically:
- Your meals, feelings, and preferences are stored in a local SQLite database on your phone
- No data is transmitted to our servers or any third-party servers
- No data is stored in the cloud
- No data leaves your device
If you delete the app, all your data is permanently deleted with it.
3. What We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect, process, or have access to:
- Your meal logs or food diary entries
- Your feeling ratings or health data
- Your name or personal information
- Your location data
- Your contacts
- Your photos (even if you attach photos to meals, they stay on your device)
- Device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Usage analytics or behavior tracking data
- Crash reports (in v1.0)
We have no servers that receive your data. We cannot access your data even if requested.
4. Third-Party Services
Version 1.0 of Palate does not use any third-party services that process your personal data. There are no analytics SDKs, no advertising networks, no crash reporting tools, and no cloud databases.
In future versions, if we introduce cloud sync or other features that involve data transmission, we will:
- Update this privacy policy before launching those features
- Require your explicit consent before any data leaves your device
- Provide clear opt-in/opt-out controls
- Use end-to-end encryption for any transmitted data
5. In-App Purchases
If you subscribe to Palate Pro, the transaction is processed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store). We receive confirmation that you have an active subscription but do not receive your payment details, credit card information, or billing address. Please refer to Apple's Privacy Policy or Google's Privacy Policy for information about how they handle payment data.
6. Children's Privacy
Palate is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided data through the App, please contact us and we will assist you in deleting it.
7. Your Rights
You have complete control over your data:
- Access: All your data is visible to you within the app at all times
- Deletion: You can delete individual entries (meals or feelings) within the app, or delete all data through Settings. Uninstalling the app permanently deletes all data
- Export: You can export your data from the Settings screen
- Portability: Your data is stored in a standard SQLite format on your device
For EU/EEA Residents (GDPR)
Since we do not collect or process your personal data on our servers, most GDPR provisions regarding data controllers do not apply. Your data remains under your sole control on your device. However, you retain all rights under GDPR including the right to access, rectification, erasure, and data portability, all of which you can exercise directly within the app.
For California Residents (CCPA)
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Since all data is stored locally on your device, we do not "collect" personal information as defined by the CCPA.
8. Data Security
Your data is protected by:
- Device-level encryption: Your data benefits from the encryption built into iOS and Android
- Local-only storage: Since data never leaves your device, it cannot be intercepted in transit or breached from a server
- No remote access: We have no mechanism to access your data remotely

If we make changes to this Privacy Policy, we will:
- Update the "Last updated" date at the top
